Are tourists allowed to buy weed in Nijmegen?

Good news for tourists! You are welcome in coffeeshops in Nijmegen. Unlike some other Dutch cities, Nijmegen has no residency requirements for visitors. This is just a heads-up, as some cities near borders restrict cannabis sales to residents only, for example Den Bosch or Breda.

However, always remember to be 18 years or older and have valid ID for entry.

When does the weed experiment start in Nijmegen?

The Netherlands is currently conducting the ‘’Controlled Cannabis Supply Chain Experiment’’. This experiment aims to see if regulating the production, distribution, and sale of cannabis is feasible.

The goal of this experiment is to determine the possibility of decriminalizing the supply chain for cannabis and monitor its effects on crime, safety and public health. For more information read our recent article about the current cannabis legislation in the Netherlands.

In Tilburg the weed experiment already started, and so far our experience as buyers has been great! The government grown weed is tested for the percentage of THC and CBD, as well as the absence of pollution in the buds. This way quality can be guaranteed, and this is noticeable when smoking it. Another great benefit is the pricing, which is at most coffeeshops noticeable lower than the other (not government grown) strains available.

In Nijmegen the experiment will start somewhere during 2024. The local authorities didn’t mention a specific date so far. With the current situation in Dutch regional politics it is unsure what the development of the experiment will look like.

And now, let’s get into the 5 best coffeeshops in Nijmegen!

Coffeeshop Dreadlock & Jetset

Address: Vlaamsegas 40, Nijmegen
Reviews Google: 4.5/5
Are tourists allowed in coffeeshop Dreadlock & Jetset: Yes, tourists are allowed
Smoking area: Yes

At just a couple minutes’ walk from the central train station, you can find coffeeshop Dreadlock & Jetset in the center city. This is one of the first coffeeshops in the province of Gelderland and is already around since 1985! Being around for such a long time, Dreadlock & Jetset became an iconic location in Nijmegen as being one of the best coffeeshops around in the city.

Located in a small alley, the coffeeshop is open 7 days a week for both take-away and sitting in the smoking area. The sitting area gives a living room vibe and offers a nice place to sit for an hour or two.

The cannabis being sold here is outstanding. The menu is fairly small looking at the amount of different strains, but for quality you’ll be at the right place.

Coffeeshop Kronkel

Address: Vlaamsegas 26-36, Nijmegen
Reviews Google: 4.6/5
Are tourists allowed in coffeeshop Kronkel: Yes, tourists are allowed
Smoking area: Yes

Coffeeshop Kronkel has a rich history in Nijmegen as well. This coffeeshop is around sice 1986, actually in the same street as Dreadlock & Jetset. Kronkel is a well-known place popular with both locals and tourists, and for good reasons!

The shop itself looks beautiful, with a great interior and atmosphere. We always like the coffeeshops which offer lunch and dinner, making it an ideal place to meet with friends. For good service and friendly staff you’re at the right address. In our opinion Kronkel is one of the best coffeeshops in Nijmegen and we would highly recommend it when you are looking for a place to sit down and smoke weed. And don’t forget to order a milkshake here 😉

The cannabis menu is pretty good as well at Kronkel. They offer a variety of products, along with a good price-quality balance.

Coffeeshop Kruidentuin

Address: Kannenmarkt 9, Nijmegen
Reviews Google: 4.0/5
Are tourists allowed in coffeeshop Kruidentuin: Yes, tourists are allowed
Smoking area: Yes

Coffeeshop Kruidentuin is also located in the center city. The shop opened a year later than Kronkel (1987) and are a also around for multiple decades. If you like to hang out in a more modern styled location, this is your place to go. The smoking area looks very clean and fancy, and the atmosphere is good as well. You can have some drinks and watch live sport games at Kruidentuin.

This coffeeshops is most known for the hash they sell. They do offer cannabis as well, but hashish are their main passion. Be aware though that since 2020 you can’t smoke tobacco in coffeeshops anymore. Especially for hash this is unfortunate, as it is harder to smoke without tobacco.

Coffeeshop Buggy

Address: Platenmakersstraat 8, Nijmegen
Reviews Google: 4.4/5
Are tourists allowed in coffeeshop Buggy: Yes, tourists are allowed
Smoking area: Yes

Coffeeshop Buggy is officially the first coffeeshop in Nijmegen, opened in 1984. For a while it was called ‘’Smoke’’ but later renamed to ‘’Buggy’’. Pretty unique in the world of coffeeshops is that is still has the same owner after all these years. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the cannabis business.

We recommend this shop mainly for take-away, as we think previous mentioned shops are nicer to hang out at. The place is especially known for the good prices and being an old school coffeeshop.

Coffeeshop ‘t Kunsje

Address: Tweede Walstraat 108, Nijmegen
Reviews Google: 4.6/5
Are tourists allowed in coffeeshop ‘t Kunsje: Yes, tourists are allowed

Last but not least, we think that ‘t Kunsje is one of the best coffeeshops in Nijmegen. This shop offers both a great and big smoking area as well as good cannabis and hash. The lounge area is nicely designed, and feels cozy. They offer a variety of different board and card games, making sure you won’t get bored.

‘T Kunsje has an outstanding cannabis menu. They offer various special strains you don’t come across often. Beside the buds they are known for the edibles and moonrocks. With a wide selection and focus on quality, you're sure to find something you'll enjoy at this coffeeshop
