Are tourists allowed to buy weed in Nijmegen?
Good news for tourists! You are welcome in coffeeshops in Nijmegen. Unlike some other Dutch cities, Nijmegen has no residency requirements for visitors. This is just a heads-up, as some cities near borders restrict cannabis sales to residents only, for example Den Bosch or Breda.
However, always remember to be 18 years or older and have valid ID for entry.
When does the weed experiment start in Nijmegen?
The Netherlands is currently conducting the ‘’Controlled Cannabis Supply Chain Experiment’’. This experiment aims to see if regulating the production, distribution, and sale of cannabis is feasible.
The goal of this experiment is to determine the possibility of decriminalizing the supply chain for cannabis and monitor its effects on crime, safety and public health. For more information read our recent article about the current cannabis legislation in the Netherlands.
In Tilburg the weed experiment already started, and so far our experience as buyers has been great! The government grown weed is tested for the percentage of THC and CBD, as well as the absence of pollution in the buds. This way quality can be guaranteed, and this is noticeable when smoking it. Another great benefit is the pricing, which is at most coffeeshops noticeable lower than the other (not government grown) strains available.
In Nijmegen the experiment will start somewhere during 2024. The local authorities didn’t mention a specific date so far. With the current situation in Dutch regional politics it is unsure what the development of the experiment will look like.
