Decarboxylating cannabis for cannabutter
Before cannabis can be used in this recipe, it must be "activated" or, in a technical sense, decarboxylated, to maximize its benefits.
Decarboxylation is a process that activates the psychoactive compounds such as THC in the cannabis plant so that you feel the high when you consume it. Decarboxylation occurs through heat. The high temperatures when smoking and vaporizing instantly decarboxylate compounds in weed, making them immediately available for your body to absorb. When making edibles, buds are typically heated in an oven first to decarboxylate them, and then infused into a medium such as butter or oil. That infusion is then used to make edibles.
Supplies needed for decarboxylating cannabis
- Oven
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper or aluminum foil
- Cannabis
- Cannabis grinder (optional)
Instructions for decarboxylating weed
- Set the oven temperature to 110ºC, with the oven rack in the middle position. Ovens are hotter at the top and cooler at the bottom, so heating in the middle will ensure ideal decarboxylation temperature.
- Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and lightly break up or grind the cannabis onto it, but not too fine, to avoid burning.
- Heat for 30 minutes, stirring at least once.
- Let cool for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- The cannabis should look lightly toasted and golden brown.
- Continue to the following steps to infuse this into cannabis butter.
How to make butter with cannabis?
Making cannabis butter is one of the easiest and most feasible ways to enjoy weed as edibles. This because butter can easily be added to any of the cannabis recipes we usually make and wrote about.
After following above steps to activate the THC of your weed, we can start with making the cannabis butter. This recipe yields 12 tablespoons cannabutter with approximately 43mg THC per tablespoon based on a 20% THC strain.
The total cooking time is around 60 minutes from this point on.
Which supplies do you need to make cannabis butter?
